If the Robusto is "only" a hammer according to its name, the Toro (smoking time approx. 70 - 85 minutes) is a bulldozer. It's not that bad, on the contrary, the Boxpressed is a great pleasure - but with a mighty bang!
Flavour
The very first puffs reveal the character of the Toro as a distinctly evening cigar. Soft earthiness, roasted aromas of the best coffee beans and that noble, bitter-sweet flavour of premium dark chocolate characterise the smoking experience, subtly supported by a subtle fruitiness reminiscent of dried dates and figs. The longer the smoke lasts, the more the spicy and "dark" facets take centre stage; however, more delicate, sometimes beautifully woody nuances maintain the tension until the end. Joya de Nicaragua
Es ist gerade einmal fünfzig Jahre her, dass man in Nicaragua begann, nennenswert Tabak anzubauen. Damals, nach Fidel Castros Revolution, verließen viele Kubaner ihre Insel und siedelten auf dem mittelamerikanischen Festland. Insbesondere im Norden Nicaraguas, in der Region um die Stadt Estelí, fanden sie ähnliche geologische und klimatische Eigenschaften vor wie in ihrer Heimat. Und so entstand dort 1968 mit der „Joya de Nicaragua“ die erste für den Export bestimmte Zigarrenmarke des Landes. Sie ist auch heute noch eine der renommiertesten und steht auf einem Level, wie zum Beispiel die ebenfalls nicaraguanischen Padron, Cumpay, Chinchalero, Oliva oder Don Pepin. Die natürlichen Ähnlichkeiten zwischen beiden Ländern haben sich offenbar bis in die höchsten Kreise der USA herumgesprochen, denn die „Joya“ soll unter Präsident Nixon die offizielle Zigarrenmarke im Weißen Haus gewesen sein. Dass kubanischen Produkten durch ein Handelsembargo der Zugang zum US-Markt verwehrt war, sorgte für eine hohe Nachfrage bei Zigarren aus Nicaragua, die sich schnell als gleichwertige Alternative etablierten. Doch die Euphorie war von kurzer Dauer. Ende der Siebziger Jahre brach in Nicaragua Bürgerkrieg aus, der das Land über ein Jahrzehnt nicht zur Ruhe kommen lassen sollte. Erst seit 1990 herrscht politische Stabilität, was der Tabakindustrie sichtlich zugutekommt: Inzwischen zählt Nicaragua wieder zu den weltweit besten Anbau- und Fertigungsgebieten von Zigarren.
